Before & After: A New View

A graphic update for standard-issue boulder walls in Wayzata, Minnesota

Problem: A tree shrouding the facade, a boulder wall of disproportionate size to the house, and a desire by the owners to have the front of this contemporary home match the scale and detailed design of the rear pool area and marshland vista.  Solution: A bigger, bolder front garden. Removal of the locust tree grazing the house exterior, installing rectangular concrete pads that mirror the clear-story windows of the facade. Doubling the heft of the boulder wall by adding another — pulling the garden further out into the front landscape. And, a new stone staircase making for an easy transition from driveway to new garden patio. Grey-trap gravel fills the space between the concrete and defines the perimeter. A large, upright chunk of granite provides a natural sculptural form.
